LobShots Thoughts: Chargers Preseason Game 1

I love football. I love the Chargers. I love Chargers football. Even though it was only preseason and preseason games don’t mean crap, I had a BLAST watching last night. Great to see some of the rookies out there. Easily the highlight of the game was that bomb to VJ from P Riv. Watching Philip Rivers pick apart that defense on that 89 yard drive was a thing of friggin beauty. Cap it off with Tolbert getting mad hops and extension into the endzone…followed up by his signature dance. Homeboy was in mid season form. It was so good. So, so good. It was a real nice change of pace for the Kool-Aid Man, as we’re used to seeing Tolbert just blast through defenses at the goal line. Biggest thing in this game, no big injuries for the Bolts.

First string defense looked pretty solid. Felt good about that. Love the look of Bob Sanders out there. Such a trip to see a number 31 filling out that uniform. Don’t get me wrong, Antonio Cromartie is an absolute physical specimen, but Bob Sanders is thick! And guess what… he didn’t get hurt! A collective sigh of relief falls across the city. Oh, and that 103-yard kickoff return for a score by Bryan Walters in the third quarter wasn’t too shabby either.

Broken record here… and I know it was only one drive in a preseason game… but watching Philip Rivers throw to Vincent Jackson was just so good. If the Bolts can lock up VJ for a long term deal, then he and Rivers can, and should, go down as one of the greatest QB/WR tandems in the history of the National Football League. I’m not talking good. I’m talking great. Like, Montana or Young to Rice great. Peyton to Harrison. Marino to Clayton. Aikman to Irving. Whoever, you name ’em… Philip Rivers and Vincent Jackson have the potential to be better. Please, AJ Smith, for the love of all that is good in this world…sign VJ long term.
